One of the primary hormones produced in our brain that allows for quality sleep is Melatonin and is located in the pineal gland. This pineal is found in the epithalamus, near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres. Melatonin helps control your daily sleep and wake cycles and regulates your “internal clock” known as your circadian rhythm. As the sun begins to set our body recognizes this and begins to adjust melatonin levels accordingly. Melatonin and other sleep and growth factors rise through the early evening and maintain levels appropriate for sleep overnight.
